Children’s Group Art Classes | Muzart Music and Art School

Watch your child’s creativity flourish in our engaging small-group art classes. Professional instruction for ages 5-12, combining traditional and digital art techniques in a fun, supportive environment. Maximum 6 students per class ensures individual attention.

Group Art Classes at Muzart

Group art classes at Muzart Music and Art School give children ages 5–12 the chance to develop real creative skills in a structured, fun environment — with the social benefits of learning alongside peers. Since 2010, our art instructors have guided young artists through drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, and digital art creation on iPad, all in small groups of maximum 6 students. That small class size means every child gets individual attention from their instructor, even in a group setting.

We provide all art supplies as part of your tuition — professional-grade materials for in-studio work plus take-home projects. Students also have access to iPad workstations for digital art exploration. There are no hidden costs or extra supply lists. We offer two age-appropriate tracks — Junior Artists (ages 5–8) and Senior Artists (ages 8–12) — so the projects, techniques, and pace match your child’s developmental stage. If your child shows strong interest and would benefit from more focused, one-on-one attention, our private art lessons are a natural next step.

What Kids Learn in Group Art Classes

Our curriculum is structured around age-appropriate skill development, with projects designed to be engaging while building genuine artistic ability. Our guide to what children learn at different art stages covers the full developmental picture.

Junior Artists (Ages 5–8)

Junior Artists build foundational skills through fun, hands-on projects that develop coordination, creativity, and confidence:

  • Drawing Basics: Learning to see and draw simple shapes, developing pencil control, and progressing from basic forms to more detailed observational drawing
  • Colour Exploration: Colour mixing, understanding primary and secondary colours, and learning how colours work together
  • Painting Introduction: Basic brush techniques, layering, and creating simple compositions with acrylics and watercolours
  • Mixed Media Fun: Collage, texture exploration, and combining different materials in creative projects
  • Digital Art Introduction: Simple drawing and painting on iPad using age-appropriate art apps
  • 3D Creation: Basic sculpture and construction projects that introduce working in three dimensions
  • Creative Confidence: Building willingness to experiment, make mistakes, and express ideas visually

At this age, the emphasis is on exploration and process rather than polished results. Children develop fine motor skills, learn to follow multi-step instructions, and build the confidence to try new things creatively.

Senior Artists (Ages 8–12)

Senior Artists build on foundational skills with more technical instruction and complex projects:

  • Observational Drawing: Drawing from real objects, understanding proportion, shading, and perspective — the skills that make drawings look “real”
  • Advanced Colour Theory: Colour relationships, warm and cool palettes, mixing subtle variations, and using colour intentionally in compositions
  • Painting Technique: Layering, blending, brush control, and working with acrylics and watercolours on more detailed compositions
  • Mixed Media & Sculpture: Complex layering, material combinations, and three-dimensional construction that develops creative problem-solving
  • Digital Art Creation: More advanced iPad illustration, character design, and digital mixed media projects
  • Style Development: Encouraging each child to develop their own artistic voice and creative preferences
  • Art History Connections: Understanding how different artists and movements approach similar creative challenges

By this age, students are ready for more structured critique, goal-setting, and progressive skill-building. Many Senior Artists go on to our portfolio preparation program when they begin considering arts high school admissions.

What a 60-Minute Group Art Class Looks Like

Every group class follows a consistent structure that balances instruction, creation time, and social interaction:

  • Opening & Introduction (10 minutes): The instructor introduces the project for the day, demonstrates the key technique or concept, shows visual examples, and connects the lesson to broader art skills. Students see what they’ll be creating and understand the “why” behind the techniques.
  • Hands-On Creation (40 minutes): Students work on their projects with the instructor circulating, providing individual guidance, helping with technique, and encouraging experimentation. This is where the learning happens — through doing, with expert support in real time. The small class size (max 6) means every child gets meaningful one-on-one moments during each session.
  • Reflection & Display (10 minutes): Students share and discuss their work, celebrate what they’ve created, and hear a preview of the next class. Completed projects go home with students or are displayed for upcoming exhibitions.

Classes run on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings. Contact us for current schedule availability.

Frequently Asked Questions About Group Art Classes

Getting Started

What age groups do you teach?

We offer two distinct programs designed for different developmental stages:
Junior Artists (Ages 5–8): Focus on foundational skills through engaging, age-appropriate projects — basic drawing, colour exploration, simple painting, mixed media, and digital art introduction on iPad. The emphasis is on creativity, confidence, and having fun with art.
Senior Artists (Ages 8–12): More structured instruction covering observational drawing, advanced colour theory, detailed painting techniques, mixed media, sculpture, and digital art creation. Students develop technical skills and begin exploring their own artistic style.
Both tracks include all materials and meet weekly for 60-minute sessions.

How many students are in each class?

We maintain a strict maximum of 6 students per class. This small size ensures every child receives individual attention from their instructor while still benefiting from the social aspects of group learning — peer interaction, collaborative projects, and the motivation of creating alongside other kids.

What materials are provided?

All art materials are included in your tuition — there’s nothing you need to buy or bring. Students have access to professional-grade drawing materials, paints and brushes, canvases, mixed media supplies, iPad workstations with art apps, and take-home project supplies. We use quality materials because they make a real difference in what children can create and learn.

About Our Classes

What’s the difference between group classes and private art lessons?

Group classes (max 6 students) offer structured, age-appropriate curriculum with the social benefits of peer learning — collaboration, shared inspiration, and the fun of creating alongside other kids. Private art lessons offer fully customized one-on-one instruction at any age (5 through adult), moving at the student’s own pace on their specific interests. Both formats include all materials. Some families start with group classes and add private lessons later for more focused development or portfolio preparation.

What should my child wear to class?

Comfortable clothing that can get messy. We use smocks and protective coverings, but paint and art materials occasionally find their way onto clothes. Avoid sending children in clothes you’d be upset about staining.

How do you keep parents updated on progress?

We provide regular updates through monthly progress reports, digital portfolio samples, direct parent-teacher communication, and take-home projects that show what your child is working on. Our student art exhibitions give parents a chance to see their child’s development in a gallery-style setting alongside their classmates’ work.
