Understanding RCM Piano Levels

The Royal Conservatory of Music examination system is structured as a progressive series of levels, each building on the skills developed in the previous one. Here’s an overview of what to expect at each stage:

Preparatory A and Preparatory B

The entry point for young pianists, typically ages 5–8. These levels introduce basic note reading, simple pieces, and foundational hand position. Exams are shorter and designed to be an encouraging first experience.

Levels 1–4 (Elementary)

Students develop reading fluency, basic scales and chords, and begin playing pieces with more musical expression. Most students in this range are between ages 7–12, though adults starting piano often move through these levels at an accelerated pace.

Levels 5–8 (Intermediate)

A significant step up in technical and musical demands. Students work on more complex scales and arpeggios, longer and more expressive repertoire, and begin developing independence between hands. Theory co-requisites become mandatory at these levels. Many students reach Level 8 by their early to mid-teens.

Levels 9–10 (Advanced)

These levels demand serious commitment and refined musicianship. Repertoire becomes substantially longer and more technically demanding. Students at this level are typically preparing for post-secondary music programs or pursuing personal excellence.

ARCT (Associate of The Royal Conservatory)

The highest practical certification, equivalent to a diploma-level performance standard. ARCT candidates perform a full recital-length program and must demonstrate professional-level technique, interpretation, and stage presence. Our teachers have experience guiding students through this intensive preparation.
