Our RCM Examination Instructors

RCM preparation is taught by our piano and voice instructors who have deep experience with the examination system and proven student results:

• Liz — RCM certified with extensive experience preparing students at all examination levels. Specializes in classical instruction, jazz, and music theory. Liz’s structured approach to technical requirements and theory co-requisites has produced consistent Honours results.
• Pascal — Graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Music and the University of Music “Franz Liszt” Weimar, Germany. International competition prize winner. Pascal brings advanced classical training and competition-level preparation that benefits students pursuing higher RCM grades (8–10 and ARCT).
• Samantha — Core member of the Muzart team since 2010. Samantha’s experience spans the full range of RCM levels, with particular strength in building classical foundations and preparing students for their first examinations.
• Leticia — Classical and contemporary piano instruction with bilingual capability (English/Spanish). Leticia integrates theory naturally into practical lessons, which strengthens students’ preparation for both practical and written examinations.

What RCM Preparation Covers

Every RCM practical examination includes the same core components. Our preparation addresses each one systematically so students walk into the exam room confident in every area.

Repertoire Development

Students select 3–4 pieces from the RCM syllabus representing different musical periods and styles. Our instructors help with piece selection that showcases each student’s strengths, then work through interpretation, phrasing, dynamics, and musical expression — going beyond correct notes to the musicality that earns Honours marks. Technical Requirements

Scales, arpeggios, chord progressions, and technical exercises become more complex at each level. We build these systematically into weekly lessons so they develop naturally alongside repertoire work — not as a last-minute cram before the exam. Proper technique, consistent tempo, and clean execution are drilled until they’re automatic.

Theory Co-Requisites

Theory certificates are required for RCM practical examinations at Level 5 and above. We integrate theory instruction directly into lessons rather than treating it as a separate subject, so students understand how theory connects to the music they’re playing. Ear Training & Sight Reading

RCM Examination Levels & Preparation Timelines

The RCM system spans from introductory Preparatory levels through to the professional-level ARCT diploma. Here’s what each stage involves and how long preparation typically takes:

Preparatory A & B

Introductory levels for young beginners. Focus on basic technique, simple repertoire, and foundational music reading. No formal examination required — these are stepping-stone levels. Our Preparatory Level parent’s guide covers what to expect.

Grades 1–4 (Elementary)

Building fundamental skills: basic scales, simple arpeggios, short repertoire pieces, and introductory ear training. Students typically prepare for each level over 6–8 months of weekly lessons and consistent home practice. Our Grade 1 parent’s guide explains what’s involved in the first formal examination.

Grades 5–8 (Intermediate)

More complex technical requirements, varied repertoire from different historical periods, and deeper musical interpretation. Theory co-requisites begin at this stage. Preparation typically takes 8–12 months per level.

Grades 9–10 (Advanced)

Demanding technical proficiency, sophisticated interpretation, and comprehensive musicianship. Students at this level are working toward near-professional performance standards. Preparation takes 12–18 months per level.

ARCT (Associate Diploma)

Professional-level performance and teaching diplomas. ARCT preparation represents 18–24 months of intensive study and is suitable for students with strong Grade 10 foundations who are pursuing music at a serious or professional level.
