Frequently Asked Questions About RCM Exam Preparation

What RCM levels do you prepare students for?

We prepare students for all RCM levels — from Preparatory A and B through Level 10 and ARCT. Each level has specific repertoire, technical, and theory requirements, and your instructor builds a structured plan covering every component needed for examination success.

How long does it take to prepare for an RCM exam?

Preparation time varies by level and the student’s starting point. For most students, we recommend at least 6–12 months of consistent preparation before sitting an exam. During your trial lesson, your instructor will assess your current abilities and recommend a realistic timeline.

Do you cover both practical and theory exams?

Yes. Our program includes preparation for the practical exam (repertoire, technical requirements, ear training, and sight reading) as well as theory co-requisites. Theory instruction is integrated into your regular lessons, so you don’t need to study it separately.

Does my child need prior piano experience before starting RCM prep?

Not necessarily at the Preparatory level — beginners can work toward Preparatory A as their first goal. For higher levels, students should already have a foundation in piano technique and reading. Your instructor will assess your child’s readiness during the trial lesson and recommend the appropriate starting level.

What happens during a mock examination?

Mock exams simulate the actual RCM examination experience — same format, timing, and conditions. Students perform their repertoire, technical requirements, and sight reading exercises as they would on exam day. This helps build confidence and identify areas that need additional work before the real exam.

How do I register for an RCM exam?

RCM exam registration is done through The Royal Conservatory’s website during their registration periods (typically months before the exam session). Your instructor will advise on timing and help ensure you’re ready before registering. We can also help you understand the current exam session schedule and deadlines.

How do I get to your studio from Toronto?

Take TTC Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth) westbound to Kipling Station — our studio is a 10-minute walk or quick bus ride south to The East Mall. By car, take the Gardiner Expressway to Highway 427 North; the drive from most Toronto neighbourhoods is 15–25 minutes with free parking on-site.
