Expert Private Art Lessons | Muzart Music and Art School

Develop your artistic skills with Toronto’s finest art instructors. Professional instruction in both traditional and digital mediums, featuring comprehensive training for all skill levels and portfolio preparation for prestigious art programs.

Private Art Lessons at Muzart

Private art lessons at Muzart Music and Art School provide one-on-one instruction tailored entirely to your goals, interests, and pace. Since 2010, our art instructors — including two OCAD University graduates and a third completing her Master of Fine Arts there — have helped students across the Greater Toronto Area develop real skills in drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, and digital illustration on iPad. Whether you’re a child exploring art for the first time, a teen building a portfolio for ESA or OCAD, or an adult developing a creative practice, our instructors design a personalized plan around what you want to learn.

We provide all art supplies as part of your tuition — professional-grade materials for in-studio work plus a take-home art kit for home practice. Students also have access to iPad workstations with professional art apps for digital creation. There are no hidden costs or extra material purchases. If you’re wondering whether private lessons or group art classes are the better fit, the key difference is pacing and customization: private lessons move at your speed, on your interests, with your instructor’s full attention for the entire session.

Private Art Lessons for Kids, Teens & Adults

Private instruction looks different at every age. Our teachers adapt their approach to match each student’s developmental stage, attention span, and creative interests.

Private Art Lessons for Children (Ages 5–12)

Young artists build foundational skills through drawing, painting, colour mixing, and simple sculpture — all in a supportive one-on-one environment where they can explore at their own pace. Lessons are structured around engaging projects that develop hand-eye coordination, observation skills, and creative confidence. Digital art on iPad is introduced gradually, and students take home completed projects along with their art supply kit for home practice. Our guide to age-appropriate art projects explains what skills develop at each stage.

Private Art Lessons for Teens (Ages 13–17)

Teens often have specific goals — preparing a portfolio for ESA or Cawthra Park, developing a personal style, or learning digital illustration. Private lessons give them focused attention on exactly what they need. Our instructors work with teens on observational drawing, painting technique, composition, and mixed media while building the technical range that arts programs look for in portfolios. For teens on a portfolio preparation track, private lessons are the most effective format for developing admission-ready work.

Private Art Lessons for Adults

Adults come to art lessons for many reasons — picking up a new creative skill, returning to drawing or painting after years away, exploring digital art, or developing work for a specific purpose. Our instructors meet adult learners where they are, with no assumptions about prior experience. Lessons focus on what you want to create, using whichever mediums interest you, at a pace that fits your schedule.

Mediums & Techniques We Teach

Private lessons cover the full range of traditional and digital art mediums. Your instructor customizes the focus based on your goals — you can explore broadly or go deep into specific areas.

Drawing

Drawing is the foundation of all visual art. Private lessons cover graphite, charcoal, pastels, coloured pencils, and ink — progressing from basic shapes and shading to advanced observational drawing, proportion, perspective, and figure work. Our drawing fundamentals guide covers the core skills young artists develop.

Painting

Painting instruction covers acrylics, watercolours, and gouache — with a focus on colour theory, brush technique, layering, composition, and developing a personal approach. Students work from observation, reference, and imagination depending on their level and interests.

Mixed Media & Sculpture

Mixed media projects combine drawing, painting, collage, and found materials to develop creative problem-solving and experimentation. Sculpture and 3D construction introduce students to working in three dimensions — an important skill for well-rounded portfolios.

Digital Art on iPad

Students create digital illustrations, character designs, and mixed media works using professional art apps on our iPad workstations. Digital art skills are increasingly valued by art schools and creative industries, and our program integrates digital work alongside traditional techniques so students develop fluency in both.

Portfolio Development

For students preparing for arts school admissions, private lessons include strategic portfolio planning, medium selection, project development, and documentation. We guide students through building a diverse body of work that demonstrates range, technical skill, and creative thinking. See our dedicated portfolio preparation program for more detail.

What a Private Art Lesson Looks Like

Every private art lesson at Muzart is one-on-one instruction with all materials provided. Here’s a typical session:

  • Review & Setup (5 minutes): Your instructor reviews your progress, discusses the plan for today’s session, and sets up materials for your project.
  • Demonstration & Instruction (10–15 minutes): Your instructor demonstrates the technique or concept for the session — whether it’s a new drawing method, colour mixing approach, or digital tool — and explains the principles behind it.
  • Guided Practice (20–30 minutes): You work on your project with your instructor providing real-time feedback, corrections, and encouragement. This is where the bulk of skill development happens.
  • Review & Practice Plan (5 minutes): Your instructor reviews what you’ve accomplished, provides specific guidance on what to practice at home, and outlines what’s coming next.

Lesson lengths are 30–60 minutes depending on age and goals. Your instructor recommends the best duration during your trial lesson.

Our Art Teachers

Our private art instructors bring professional studio practice, formal training, and a genuine passion for teaching. Two of our art teachers are OCAD University graduates, and a third is completing her Master of Fine Arts at OCAD:

  • Janessa — Master of Fine Arts candidate at OCAD University, with an Honours BA in Studio Arts from the University of Toronto. Specializes in large-scale acrylic and oil painting, portraiture, landscape and still life, with art history and colour theory woven into her lessons.
  • Abby — Bachelor’s in Drawing and Painting from OCAD University. Professional animator and illustrator with industry experience in 2D animation, character design, and concept art. Ideal for students interested in animation, comics, and visual storytelling.
  • Anita — Bachelor of Fine Arts from OCAD University. Professional exhibiting artist with shows in Toronto and internationally. Specializes in figurative work, oil painting, and classical techniques grounded in art history.
  • Lexi — Versatile instructor who brings energy and adaptability across multiple mediums and age groups.

During your trial lesson, we’ll help match you with the instructor whose style and specialties best fit your goals.

I have been taking piano lessons at Muzart for seven years. Sharbel is by far one of the best instructors I have met. While we are practicing the RCM songs required for the exams, he would always help me with any piece of music that I wished to pursue. I would definitely recommend attending this school.

I love this school. I have watched my daughter's progress over the years. The staff are very dedicated to inspiring the children to having an interest and love for music. In addition to all this, their administration is very well organized so we are very lucky to have this school in our neighborhood.

This place is amazing! The staff are so patient and friendly and my daughter always has a blast here. They know how to teach my daughter in the way that works best for her. Her instructor Owen is so talented and makes her feel so comfortable learning at her own pace. I am so happy I changed her old studio and started coming here. Would highly recommend for kids and Adults!

Muzart is an excellent institution for music and art. I've been attending it since 2011, and I am truly satisfied with the music lessons. I give full recommendations to those who have an interest in music or art.

I found this place in hopes that I can better prepare my portfolio for post secondary school, and I cannot recommend a better school than this. Firstly, Abby is a wonderful art teacher and made me feel not only extremely comfortable while working with her, but also gave me excellent advice while I created artwork and made some pointers to guide me in the right direction, especially from a graduate like herself and having that kind of experience. I always felt excited to go into class with Abby! Secondly, not just Abby but other staff members are very kind and are welcoming. The two ladies I saw at the front were always polite and added to the really warm atmosphere of the place. Overall I cannot thank Abby enough for truly encouraging and motivating me to complete artwork and let my personality shine through during our talks, I'm very grateful I was able to work with her and have confidence in my portfolio after we completed our lessons together. Thank you Muzart! :-)

If you’re looking for a music school that adapts to your learning style and your musical goals, Muzart is the place to be. Out of all of the music schools I’ve been to, Muzart is one of the only places in which I felt that the teachers were genuinely interested in what I wanted to do, whether it be excel in my piano skills or just jam away on my guitar. Its relaxed yet professional environment makes it a very comfortable place to learn instruments or art, making it feel more like a home lesson than a classroom. The teachers are all extremely talented at both music and teaching. I highly recommend this school, it’s treated me extremely well and i’m sure it will do the same for you or your children.

Frequently Asked Questions About Private Art Lessons

Getting Started

What age can I start private art lessons?

We welcome students from age 5 through adults. For children ages 5–8, private lessons focus on foundational skills through engaging, age-appropriate projects. Older children and teens can work on more advanced techniques, specific mediums, or portfolio preparation. Adults of any experience level — including complete beginners — are welcome. Your $35 trial lesson includes an assessment so we can recommend the right approach.

Do I need previous art experience?

No prior experience is needed at all. Many of our students are complete beginners when they start. Our instructors adapt every lesson to your current skill level, whether you’ve never picked up a pencil or you’re an experienced artist looking to develop new techniques. The trial lesson gives us a clear picture of where to begin.

What materials do I need at home?

Nothing beyond what we provide. Private lesson students receive a complete take-home art kit as part of their tuition, plus access to all professional supplies during lessons. iPad workstations for digital art are available during class time. There are no additional material purchases required at any point.

About Our Lessons

How long are private art lessons?

Private lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes, once a week. Younger children often start with 30 minutes, while teens, adults and portfolio students usually benefit from 45 or 60. Your instructor will recommend the best length during your trial lesson.

What mediums can I learn?

Drawing in graphite, charcoal, pastel and ink; painting in acrylic, watercolour and gouache; mixed media and sculpture; and digital art on iPad. You can explore broadly or focus deeply on the mediums that interest you most.

Do you help with art school portfolio preparation?

Yes — portfolio preparation is one of our specialties. Our instructors have helped students gain admission to the Etobicoke School of the Arts (ESA), Cawthra Park Secondary School, Cardinal Carter Academy, OCAD University, Humber College, and other competitive programs. We recommend starting portfolio preparation 12–18 months before high school application deadlines, or at least one year before post-secondary deadlines. See our dedicated portfolio preparation program for full details.

Practice and Progress

How much art practice is recommended at home?

Practice recommendations vary by age and goals:
– Children (ages 5–8): 15–20 minutes of drawing or creating, 3–4 times per week
– Older children and teens: 30 minutes, 4–5 times per week
– Portfolio preparation students: 45–60 minutes daily during active preparation periods
– Adults: Whatever fits your schedule — even 20 minutes of sketching regularly builds skill
We provide a take-home art kit so students always have the right materials available. Your instructor gives specific practice guidance after each lesson.

How do you track student progress?

We track progress through ongoing feedback during lessons, periodic progress reports for parents, and portfolio development that provides a clear visual record of skill advancement. For portfolio preparation students, we maintain a timeline with milestones tied to application deadlines. Most students show noticeable improvement in observation, technique, and creative confidence within 3–4 months of consistent weekly instruction.
